Regional sustainable development, restoring and maintaining healthy economies and healthy ecosystems in rural areas and small towns ("conservation-based development"); comparative studies of rural areas and small towns in industrialized nations; socio-economic development of indigenous communities; planning history.

Research Interests

Socio-economic development problems of agricultural and resource-based communities, as they make the transition to a more diverse and sustainable local and regional economy.

Current/Recent Research Projects

• Indigenous Rights and Resource Sovereignty: a comparative study of the tensions between indigenous peoples and modern nation states, focusing on the question of control and access to indigenous communities' natural resources. This work just getting underway, will compare policies and practices in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the U.S.
• Kasology: Rural Socio-economic Development in Mountainous Areas: a comparative study of community development approaches in the rural U.S., Austria, and Japan; with funding from multiple local sources in each country. This three-year project (2000-2003) will lead to a scholarly monograph.
