PURPOSEThrough most of the 20th century Oregon has been deservedly proud of its reputation for creative public policy. The state is a leader in addressing a variety of public issues, from the Oregon system of direct democracy to environmental management to health care to strategic planning, to mention just a few examples. On these and many more issues, other states and indeed, other nations look to Oregon as the incubator of innovation. Oregon's public policy success depends on three features of the state's political culture.
Supporting and nurturing the long-term health of Oregon's innovative approaches to public policy is critical to the future of our state and will also benefit other states and nations that look to Oregon as a source of ideas and inspiration. In recognition of this, University of Oregon Vice President for Research Richard Linton formally authorized the Institute for Policy Research and Innovation, which came into existence July 1, 2004.
ADMINISTRATIONAs is typical for other UO research centers and institutes, the primary reporting responsibility is to the Vice President for Research. However, IPRI is located within the School of Architecture and Allied Arts and the IPRI director reports secondarily to the Dean of the School of Architecture and Allied Arts. The IPRI director is appointed by the Vice President for Research, and serves at her/his pleasure. The director is appointed for a three-year term and is expected to serve for the entire term of appointment, except in unusual circumstances. The Vice President for Research has responsibility for periodically evaluating the performance of the director, in consultation with the AAA dean. Administrative Staff
